A Night of Terror | The Deadly Wolf Attacks in Uttar Pradesh

     WOLF ATTACK

In Early 2024, a troubling series of wolf attacks in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, escalated into a public safety crisis. On a particularly shocking night, a lone wolf attacked Two 11-year-Old Girls while they slept in their homes.

INCIDENT 1:

In the first incident, Suman was sleeping in Gadarian Purwa Village when the wolf broke in at midnight, grabbing her by the neck and dragging her towards a nearby field. Her family’s desperate cries for help drew villagers, who rushed in and managed to scare off the wolf. Suman sustained serious injuries and was taken to the district hospital for treatment.

INCIDENT 2:

A few hours later, in Khairighat Village, another 11-year-Old Girl, Shivani, faced a similar fate. The wolf entered her thatched hut around 4 am and seized her while she was asleep beside her mother. Quick actions by the villagers again led to the wolf fleeing, but Shivani was also injured and required medical attention at a nearby health center.

The region had already seen a troubling pattern of attacks, with over ten fatalities, mostly among children, and dozens more injured over the past month and a half. In response, the forest department launched "Operation Bhediya" to capture the wolves responsible. So far, five out of a pack of Six Wolves had been captured, but the remaining lone male was still at large, posing a significant threat to local residents.

GOVERNMENT ACTION:

As a precaution, the government declared the situation a "wildlife disaster," mobilizing teams to patrol the area at night and employing various tactics, including using elephant dung and urine to deter the wolves. The attacks highlighted the urgent need for effective measures to ensure the safety of both the community and the wildlife involved. The incidents raised significant concerns about living conditions in the area, as many families reported inadequate housing that left them vulnerable to such attacks.
