A Time Traveler Visited Her
16 years ago, I was in college and a traveler
came to my beach house that I shared with 3 roommates. He slipped in with two early 20 something guys who were friends of my
roommate one night. They had come from 30 miles away to hang out and the
person they brought with them was a 30 something man who had given them a ride.
I don’t know how they knew eachother, but it was clear that he was just a ride
and not their friend. He was physically striking with a bald head, very long
beard, strong build and he wore a Phillies tank top jersey. His eyes were light
brown, slightly lighter than his skin and his voice was extremely deep and
gravely. He had a very ancient look, like a babylonian relief carving.
The guys he drove introduced him as
Philly (because he was from Philadelphia) and immediately went off to another part of the house
with my roommate, leaving him in our living room. My boyfriend at the time was
studying in my bedroom with the door closed and so was my male roommate, in his
room. I chatted with the stranger about general things and soon we were talking
about the town I lived in and the ocean. He mentioned that he had never seen
the ocean before and I told him that the ocean was at the end of my street. He
was genuinely surprised and I told him I’d walk him down to the end of the
street to take a look at it. It was all very casual with no ounce of romantic
tension or flirtation, just like casually showing someone your BBQ grill in the
backyard.
We left the
house together, and set off toward the coastal path at the end of my street. The Pacific Ocean was literally 10 houses
away from my corner house. We began walking toward the middle of the quiet,
palm lined street and we both reached out at the same time and held hands as we
walked under the moonlight toward the ocean. I cannot explain why. I was a 20
year old woman and would not trust a strange man, let alone lead him anywhere
at night. I definitely would never hold a strange man’s hand but I did,
willingly. It felt natural yet completely unlike myself. He did not reach for
my hand first. I cannot explain the impulse.
We talked as we walked. He said he
wanted relationship advice and I obliged him. When we had walked down the
street (about 5 houses down from mine), he looked down at me and said “I am a
traveller”. At that
moment, I looked up at him and screamed so loudly that my own voice filled my
head and I could not hear the scream, it was so loud. It was a guttural and
genuine release of fear. At that same time that I screamed, the earth literally
shook beneath my feet like an earthquake and he and I rose up into the sky onto
a higher astral plane together. It was almost like a different plateau like the
ones you jump on in Super Smash Brothers. I can’t describe it any other way. We
rose up off of the earth’s crust into the sky and were surrounded by the night
sky, moonlight and stars.
The fear was instantly replaced by
knowing. I KNEW what he was referring to. My first words were, “are there
others”. He calmly said “yes”. We talked freely about this supernatural experience we were
sharing and his travels. He said he had
come from far away and did not know that there were other stars. He explained some “laws” governing his
travels that I do not recall and I listened like a student. Mind you, we
were not physically on earth’s crust in the middle of the street together. We
were above it.
Eventually,
we descended from that plane and resumed our walk for 5 more houses until we
reached the path adjacent to the ocean cliff. A police officer shined his light
on us from afar on the path. I imagine that he heard my scream or someone had
called the police. Philly immediately assumed a prone position on the ground
and began begging the officer to not hurt him. It was extremely dramatic, but I
was aware of harsh police brutality in Philadelphia and it seemed logical that
he would have this response. The officer helped pick Philly up off of the
ground and calmly explained to him that he was in the state of California where
the police don’t do that sort of thing. His words, not mine. The officer asked
me if I was okay and I told him that I was fine. Honestly, I did not feel
afraid. I explained that we were just taking a neighborhood walk and had had a
heated conversation. The officer let us go on our way.
Sobered by
the police interaction, we paused for about 2-3 minutes to take in the view of
the ocean and turned back around to walk 10 houses back home. We chatted about
more things and when we rounded the corner to face my house, my boyfriend came
running outside shouting. He said “where have you been for 3 hours? Why are you
out with this homeless man?”. I looked at my watch and it was 3 hours later! I
went on a walk to the end of the street and had an interaction with the police.
All of this could have only lasted 25 minutes, tops. Yet hours had elapsed!!!
Soon, my boyfriend and Philly were sizing each other up and it was clear that a
fight would occur. Abruptly, my boyfriend threw up his hands and ran to his
Jeep and sped off down the street without saying anything to me. Philly
remarked on how my boyfriend was not a good man.
I was
absolutely disturbed at this point. All of this drama had occurred. I lost 3
hours, I ascended into the sky, the police thing happened, the almost fight, my
boyfriend speeding off. I ran into my house and screamed at the two guys and
Philly to gtfo. It was all too weird. I shoved them all out of my house.
The next
morning, I woke my male roommate up and told him the account of the previous
night. He told me that he had fallen asleep to the sound of Philly’s booming
voice and though he never left his room that night, he could sense some of the
unusualness of what I described. He described it as being hypnotically lulled
to sleep by the sound of his voice.
Then the
doorbell rang. My roommate got up to answer the door. It was Philly. I could
hear his voice on the porch talking to my roommate. My roommate was not talking
back. Philly was doing what I can only describe as explaining my rooommate to
himself. He was telling him that his father loved him, but that it was
difficult for him to express it. He was telling him things nobody else could
know. My roommate was transfixed in the doorway. He did not invite Philly in
nor had they even exchanged proper greetings. I walked over to the doorway to see Philly step aside and say “I
brought my wife and children here, can we come in”. OUT OF NOWHERE, there was a woman and two children behind him. Mind
you, Philly did not live in my town. I assumed he was visiting the town 30
miles away where he met the two guys and gave them a ride. And he drove to my
house again the next day with a family?? And they were on vacation from
Philadelphia? It was so unusual and
unexpected! My roommate said yes and
they walked inside. Once inside, the woman seemed to not be mentally present.
She did not respond to my greetings and just stared around me. The children, a boy and girl of like 4 and
5, behaved like normal children.
When the rest of my roommates got
home, Philly and co. were still there and he immediately performed the same
immediate “reading” on them as well. I say reading because it’s the only word I
have for what he did.
All but one of my roommates were in
tears by his revelations. None of my roommates were guillable or naive, his
words were genuinely affecting them. The things he said were so true and so
specific and pointed that we literally were all transfixed. Eventually, the
skeptical friend shooed him out and we just sat there, baffled.
I have
entertained the following explanations: charismatic stranger hypothesis, he was
messing with everyone's head, maybe this guy was cold reading everyone, maybe
we were just a bunch of impressionable college kids after all, just a weird
guy, maybe I dissociated after I screamed and lost track of time… yet none of
it explains my experience. I’m a rational, more skeptical than most person,
very safety minded. I was completely sober for months preceding this experience
due to recovering from a surgery, and never experienced anything like this
before or since. Yet, I conservatively lost about 2.5 hours of time, I
abandoned my natural instincts and trusted this weird person and I can’t
explain how or why, this person’s entire aura and countenance was extremely
unusual and it appeared as though he conjured a woman and children out of
nowhere the next day. Why did he come back to my house the next day? Why did I
hold this rando’s hand as I walked down the street? Why did the woman seem like
a robot? Why did he reveal these things to me? How did the earth shake and how
did we leave to another plane where we communed like that? It’s genuinely the
strangest thing that has ever happened to me. I talk about it with my college
friends from time to time with no real resolution and we’re all still baffled.
I literally don’t even know this person’s real name.
